Lactobacillus stimulans™ - Active Ingredient For Microbiotic Skin Protection
Our skin is our largest organ, external shield and an important component of our immune system. A healthy skin not only radiates beauty, but is also important for our physical and mental well-being.
While the dissemination of pathogenic bacteria by unwashed hands as a source of wound infection was brought up by the pioneers of microbiology in the early 19th century, the discovery of the acid mantle on the skin in the early 20th century for the first time revealed that bacteria residing on the skin can have beneficial effects as well. Today, research on the composition and interactions of the human skin flora - nowadays called the skin microbiome - with skin and immune cells impressively supports the important role of a balanced skin microbiome for healthy skin. If the skin micobiome becomes dysbalanced, pathogenic bacteria can spread and may damage the skin structure, thus leading to acute infections and chronic inflammation.
Environmental influences, unhealthy lifestyle and above all excessive hygiene measures such as frequent washing or the use of disinfectants can damage the skin microbiome and thus the microbial protective shield of the skin. As a consequence, more than 30% of people suffer from dry skin, itching and inflammation with increasing prevalence.
We have developed the active ingredient Lactobacillus stimulans™ from lactic acid bacteria, and it specifically promotes the growth of beneficial skin bacteria.
The active ingredient is an extract obtained from a highly selected Lactobacillus brevis bacterial strain (wild type). The extract contains no living bacteria and therefore does not impose any risk of infection or genetic interaction with the microbiome. The active ingredient is patent protected.
The mechanism of action of Lactobacillus stimulans™
By stimulating growth of the most prevalent commensal skin bacterium Staphylococcus epidermidis, potentially harmful skin bacteria (e.g. Staphylococcus aureus) are suppressed by diverse defense strategies. Further, Staphylococcus epidermidis and the active ingredient excert antiinflammatory effects on skin and immune cells. Lactobacillus stimulans™ can restore the protective shield of the skin in sensitive and problematic skin as well as in inflammatory dermatoses such as atopic dermatitis or psorasis. When applied regularly, the active ingredient keeps the skin flora in balance, strengthens the skin's barrier function and protects it against pathogens.
The stimulating and anti-inflammatory effects as well as the stabilization of the skin's moisture balance have been clearly demonstrated in scientific in-vivo and ex-vitro studies.
The active ingredient can be used in various formulations, in cosmetics, medical cosmetics and in dermatological products.
Lactobacillus stimulans™ is offered as a liquid solution.
